Season status by species

Each count is a number of Management Units on October 29, 2026, evaluated by the same engine as the Hunt map. A unit that is not covered is a gap in North Ground's coverage, not a closed season.

Questions

British Columbia hunting seasons: answers

What can I hunt in British Columbia right now?

As of October 29, 2026, North Ground's certified rules show a season running in at least one of British Columbia's Management Units for American black bear (209 of 221), rock ptarmigan (149 of 221), ruffed grouse (217 of 221), sharp-tailed grouse (27 of 221), snowshoe hare (201 of 221), spruce grouse (206 of 221) and willow ptarmigan (149 of 221). North Ground certifies 7 species here; anything else is not covered on this page, which is not the same as closed. Whether a running season is open to you still depends on your licence, residency and method, and federal migratory game bird seasons are not listed here.

What hunting zones does British Columbia use?

Government of British Columbia sets seasons by Management Units (221). North Ground Hunt draws the authority's own boundaries; use your location or search a place there to find the unit you are in.

How current is this British Columbia season information?

The status is recomputed for each day from North Ground's certified rules, which were last verified against the official sources on Sep 29, 2026. The authority's own regulations are the law.

Limits

What North Ground does not cover here

  • B.C. Reg. 76/84 (Closed Areas Regulation) PREVAILS over 190/84 to the extent of the conflict (s. 1.1). Its 254 live areas are encoded as 325 within-zone restrictions — 103 close a season, 193 forbid discharging with the season left open, 29 restrict ammunition — and they reach every British Columbia answer. None of them can be PLACED: 191 name only a Management Unit that CONTAINS the area, and 134 name no unit at all, so each resolves to MAY_APPLY and never to a decided answer. They therefore contribute nothing to coverage, by the rule that coverage counts deliverable answers rather than encoded records.
  • The missing input is geometry, and it is a CONSTRAINT rather than a backlog item. B.C. Reg. 76/84 Schedule 15 carries 28 map references and the regulation's own note states the maps are “exempt from publication and may be inspected at the offices of the Wildlife Branch” in Victoria. There is no published version to licence, mirror or ingest, by the authority’s own instrument — so this is not a matter of searching harder. For the roughly 92 areas with neither a named unit nor a map reference, the only geography is metes-and-bounds prose about railway stations and highway centre lines, which is not a source of coordinates. An intentional, evidenced UNKNOWN.
  • British Columbia's ammunition fact moved from a corpus KNOWN INCOMPLETE (190/84 alone) to a corpus COMPLETE with PLACEMENT UNKNOWN: the 29 ammunition areas of 76/84 are read and carried, and none can yet be placed. That is an improvement in the evidence and is not answerability.
  • Legal hunting hours are read and cited (B.C. Reg. 190/84 s. 14 (1) — one hour either side, not the half hour three other provinces use) but no clock time is stated: British Columbia spans two time zones and the Peace River region keeps Mountain time year-round, so North Ground cannot establish the timezone at a point. The refusal is about the clock, not the law.
  • Seven species only: ruffed, spruce and sharp-tailed grouse, rock and willow ptarmigan, snowshoe hare and black bear. Every other British Columbia species is UNKNOWN, and a drawn boundary is not a certified rule.
  • The wave reaches 221 of 225 Management Units; the other four answer UNKNOWN rather than being assumed closed.
  • Outside 2026-07-01 to 2027-06-30 the bundle is not certified, and a date there answers NEEDS_VERIFICATION.
  • Two disputes with the 2026-2028 synopsis are unresolved by design and answer CONFLICT: the spring black bear closing date (regulation June 20, synopsis June 30) and a September 1-9 youth grouse season the synopsis prints and Part 1 of Schedule 8 does not list.
  • Limited Entry Hunting (B.C. Reg. 134/93) is layered over general open seasons and is not evaluated; a unit no general-season row names is UNKNOWN, not CLOSED.
  • Closures inside units that the regulation describes in words or on maps, provincial parks named in Part 2 and private-property-only seasons have no boundary North Ground holds; answers there are NEEDS_VERIFICATION.
  • Deer, moose, elk, sheep, goat, caribou, bison, cougar, wolf, blue grouse and all migratory birds are not encoded.
  • This page describes sport hunting seasons. It does not describe harvesting under treaty or Aboriginal rights, which is a separate legal context North Ground does not evaluate.
