Limits

What North Ground does not cover here

  • Three species answer across all 100 areas: moose, caribou and black bear, in 13 rules certified for the 2026-2027 Order. The province publishes no season dates in its regulations at all — the Wild Life Regulations delegate to ministerial orders and s. 89 declares that a species no order names has no open season — so the bundle is built from the annual Open Seasons Order for the dates and three standing species orders for the areas. Every rule is island-scoped or Labrador-scoped: island moose closes 31 December while Labrador’s runs to 14 March, and caribou has no Labrador season at all, declared for conservation by s. 8.
  • Six caribou areas are closed — 63, 65, 69, 73, 74 and 75 — and the department’s own guide names only three of them. All six are encoded as declared closures on the Order rather than left as silence.
  • Small game, coyote, wolf and the fur bearers have real published seasons in geographies North Ground does not hold: island small game is scoped to small game management areas and named islands, and the fur bearers to fur management zones. Labrador’s small game seasons are region-wide and would answer if a Labrador extent were served.
  • Moose management areas 100 and 101 — the Eastern/Avalon and Central Moose Reduction Zones — are 3 km highway-buffer corridors that OVERLAP the numbered areas, and the province’s own service carries neither. The underlying area’s answer is still correct, because the department confirms a hunter licensed for an overlapping area may hunt the overlapping portion; what is missing is the MRZ licence opportunity.
  • Gros Morne and Terra Nova National Parks run their own moose hunts in park sub-areas (“2E: Zone 1” to “2E: Zone 4” and “28A”) that the provincial order does not describe and the province’s layer quarantines. No answer here may be read as saying moose is closed inside either park.
  • Legal hunting hours are stated province-wide and computed for the island only. Labrador does not keep one clock — most of it is on Atlantic Time and a southeastern coastal strip on Newfoundland Time — and North Ground has not certified where the line runs, so a Labrador answer gives the rule and declines the window rather than risking being thirty minutes wrong at both ends.
  • This page describes sport hunting seasons. It does not describe harvesting under treaty or Aboriginal rights, which is a separate legal context North Ground does not evaluate.
